Smuggler's Cove Cabin is situated on a 1.6 acre site facing Admiralty Island (largest concentration of brown bears in the world). The cabin site is bordered by 300 wooded acres of designated parks, a wonderful starting point for beach combing, hiking, fishing and kayaking. Our site has 210 feet of protected beach frontage, easy landings for a skiff or kayak. The 3 story (including sleeping loft) 500 SF cabin is built over a small stream that feeds a reservoir and supplies the cabin with water. The photo at the end of this page was taken only a short distance from the cabin. The view is of the Mendenhall Glacier.

The cabin is ideal for two. Amenities include:

  • Full size futon bed in loft. Single mattress pad for additional person.
  • Vermont Casting wood stove
  • Electric baseboard heaters
  • Gas stove
  • Refrigerator/freezer
  • TV/VCR (no cable or local reception) (tapes only)
  • No telephone service (some cell phone reception)
  • Indoor plumbing (from stream reservoir - must pack in potable water)
  • Parking is provided at the the top of the site. Access to the cabin is a 300 ft. trail down the hillside.

The cabin is ideal for a quiet get-away, hiking, sport fishing, island exploring, wildlife viewing or kayaking. Please obtain a copy of the Alaska Fish & Game Regulations and an Alaska Fishing License if you intend to do any fishing or crabbing.

The cabin is located on the Mendenhall Peninsula facing Spuhn Island. It can be reached by parking at the end of Fritz Cove Rd. (Juneau) and walking 1/4 mile (7 minute walk) along the beach at a mid to low tide or from the parking lot at the top of the site (300 ft. trail down the hillside). The back trail takes approximately 6 minutes and may require rubber boots because of some wet/muddy spots.

Alaska wildlife is abundant in the area. From the deck facing the ocean, one can spot eagles, blue heron, seals, otters, and occasionally porpoises, orcas and humpback whales. The cabin has access to waters containing king, coho and pink salmon as well as halibut, king crab and dungeness crab.
